Dieter & Erin's Story

It was initially a tip from a family member that led young couple Dieter and Erin to Attainable Homes.

"My Father-In-Law was really worried about us finding a house," shares Dieter, "because we'd been renting for quite some time and just couldn't afford the down payment."

The concerned parent sent the couple email after email with mortgage rates and related articles on starter homes. One of these emails contained an advertisement for AHCC.

"We both agreed that, hey, this might work for us. We went down to the info session and the next thing you know, we're moved into our new home!"

"Honestly, at the very beginning we really thought we wouldn't be able to afford this," confesses Erin. "But we walked away from the seminar believing that this opportunity would actually work for us."

"Homeownership was always something we wanted to get into," shares Dieter, "but the problem was that we just couldn't wrap our heads around keeping up with our rent, paying all of our bills and saving thousands of dollars to put toward our own home."

Dieter and Erin soon understood that, thanks to our down payment assistance and highly affordable home prices, this barrier to homeownership was simply removed from the equation.

"It changed our lives... It was like a sense of relief. We felt like finally we were going to own our own home and it was going to happen a lot quicker than we imagined possible."

Like many middle-income families struggling to break the entry barrier into Calgary's steep housing market, Dieter and Erin were thrilled at finding a program that seemed tailor-made for their situation.

"I guess we'd just like to say thank you," said Erin, a sentiment that Dieter quickly echoes. "Yes, thank you so much... It changed everything."

WE MAKE HOME OWNERSHIP HAPPEN

Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation (AHCC) is a nonprofit social enterprise and wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary that delivers well-appointed, entry-level homes for Calgarians who have been caught in the city’s growing housing affordability gap.

Through our Attainable Home Ownership Program, we connect builders, developers, lenders, lawyers and others to bring down the upfront costs of ownership so qualifying Calgarians can buy their very own home with a $2,000 down payment. Furthermore, when you decide to buy an attainable home, you're also choosing to pay it forward to help another family in the future. When you eventually decide to refinance or sell your home on the market, a share of the appreciation goes back into the program to fund more developments that will help even more people get a foot on the property ladder.

Do you aspire to own a home of your own? Contact us today and let us show you just how attainable this milestone can be.
