800th homeowner!

CALGARY June 7, 2017

Mayor Nenshi welcomes new homeowners into Bowness on former City-owned land and Attainable Homes celebrates 800th homeowner through the down-payment assistance program

Bill Douros and his wife, Vicky, have been counting the days until they can move their young family out of their two-bedroom rental apartment and take possession of their new townhome in Bowness. One year ago this month, Bill was the first in line at an Attainable Homes sales launch to put his name on a not-yet-built three-bedroom townhome in ARRIVE at Bowness by Partners Development Group. Bill and Vicky and their two children are the 800th homeowners through the non-profit’s down payment assistance program and today they take possession of their new home

“I was stuck in a vicious cycle of paying rent,” Douros said. “I can pay just a little bit more each month for a much bigger space for my family and know that I’m investing for our future.”

Bill and Vicky purchased their home through Attainable Homes, a non-profit organization working to help moderate-income Calgarians achieve homeownership. The program helps hard-working people like Bill purchase a home when they don’t have a lump sum down payment and have a household income below $90,000 (when children live in the house).

The program was created by The City of Calgary in 2009 to assist Calgarians bridge the growing housing affordability gap. In handing over the keys to Bill and Vicky, the program can now boast 800 clients through the program since inception eight years ago.

“Having put 800 Calgarian families through our program demonstrates the need for housing affordability in our city,” John Harrop, Attainable Homes President and CEO, said.  “We’re thrilled to celebrate the initial possessions in this modern development and give recognition to Partners Development Group for their quality construction and commitment to a Built Green sustainability standard. It’s partnerships such as this that help drive the success of our program.”

Attainable Homes Calgary Corporation (AHCC) is a nonprofit social enterprise and wholly owned subsidiary of The City of Calgary that delivers well-appointed, entry-level homes for Calgarians who have been caught in the city’s growing housing affordability gap.

Through our Attainable Home Ownership Program, we connect builders, developers, lenders, lawyers and others to bring down the upfront costs of ownership so qualifying Calgarians can buy their very own home with a $2,000 down payment. Furthermore, when you decide to buy an attainable home, you're also choosing to pay it forward to help another family in the future. When you eventually decide to refinance or sell your home on the market, a share of the appreciation goes back into the program to fund more developments that will help even more people get a foot on the property ladder.

Do you aspire to own a home of your own? Contact us today and let us show you just how attainable this milestone can be.
